Scandinavia , the region of north Europe consists of the kingdoms of Sweden, Norway,Denmark and Finland. Iceland is usually considered part of Scandinavia but is not yet covered in this website. The word “Norden” is sometimes applied to the five countries because it avoids the physiographic and cultural limitations of the word Scandinavia. Norway and Sweden are located on the Scandinavian pensinsula, Denmark belongs geologically to the northern Europe. Finland borders to Russia in the east and to Estonia in the south. The four countries border to not less than six oceans, the Gulf of Bothnia,  the Kattegat and Skagerrak, the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean. The region was heavily glaciated during the Ice Age, Jostedalsbreen in Norway, is the largest glacier of Europe. The western coast of Norway is characterized by the deep fjords. Further east both Sweden and Finland are less mountainous but offers numerous lakes and rivers. A huge part of Scandinavia lies north of the Arctic Circle, reaching its northernmost point in Cape Nordkyn, Norway.

They say the word “Scandinavia”  means the island of darkness and fog island. Notice Scandinavia is not and island! But we have to admit it is dark in the winter, but the light in the summer is even brighter and lighter than you can imagine. And it last 24 hours, read about the midnight-sun! Foggy? Sometimes, in late autmn maybe.

Current blond vikings

The blond and skinned Scandinavian people are well remembered for their notorious Viking raids during the middle ages. Scandinavians also used to be craftsmen and farmers. The Norse, Swedes and Danes frequently traveled far from home on raiding or trading expeditions, colonizing Iceland and even reaching the Americas a thousand years ago. They also fought each other and allied with each other over the centuries to define and redefine the Scandinavian nations we now know as Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

The Scandinavian peoples speak a closely related group of Germanic languages and do understand each other very well. In Finland more than 90 % of the people speaks finnish, which is a quite different language from the germanic ones. But most people in Finland speaks swedish, National authorities are obliged to offer services in both languages throughout the country.

The climate in Scandinavia varies from tundra and subarctic in the north, to humid continental in the central portion, and to marine west coast in the south and southwest. The region’s best farmland is in south Sweden. The peninsula is rich in timber and minerals ( iron and copper), and has a great hydroelectricity generating capacity. Its coastal waters are important fishing grounds. The best period of making a trip to Scandinavia is during april-september. Unless you like skiing, snowmobiles and skating.

See you in Scandinavia!
